Obesity Q & A

How does obesity affect my health?

Obesity is a common health issue that can reduce your overall quality of life. People with obesity are at a higher risk for a number of other serious health conditions including:

  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke

Obesity can also lead to osteoarthritis and problems with your hormones. If you struggle with obesity, the best way to lower your health risks is to shed the excess weight.

Abington Endocrinology is affiliated with HMR, a nationally-renowned evidence-based weight loss program. The HMR Program is designed to address the common hurdles of weight loss and help you achieve long-term success.

What is the HMR Program?

The HMR Program is a medically supervised weight-loss plan that takes the guesswork out of losing weight. It combines a highly structured diet with behavior modification to help you develop skills for safe, effective weight loss.

The program offers low-calorie meal replacements including weight-loss shakes, entrees, soups, multigrain hot cereals, and nutrition bars. You have a health educator who provides ongoing coaching and support throughout your weight-loss journey.

The HMR Program is designed to help you achieve your weight-loss goals while developing reliable and useful ways you can maintain your health and manage your weight for the long term.

How does the program work?

The HMR Program is research-based and has over 30 years of proven success. The program can be tailored to best suit your needs based on your overall health and is appropriate for people with a weight-loss goal of 20-200 or more pounds.

At Abington Endocrinology, the program begins with a medical evaluation and discussion of your weight-loss goals. The program offers two diets, one with moderate calorie restriction as well as a low-calorie option for rapid weight loss. You and Dr. Weiss work together to develop the best meal replacement and weight loss plan for you.

Once you begin the program, you attend weekly meetings for individualized coaching. Your health educator works with you to develop simple strategies to increase your physical activity and provides ongoing support as you move closer to your weight-loss goal.
